In a notable turn of events, former Indian cricketer and celebrated World Cup-winning captain, Kapil Dev, extended his hearty wishes to former opener Gautam Gambhir, who has been appointed as the coach of India's men's cricket team. Kapil shared his sentiments at the launch event of the upcoming Trinity Golf Champions League in Delhi. Notably, Kapil also serves as the President of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI).
Speaking to ANI, Kapil expressed his support for Gambhir, stating, 'Good luck to him. All the best...'. Gambhir's appointment as the new head coach, succeeding cricket legend Rahul Dravid, was officially announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on July 9.
Rahul Dravid's tenure concluded following India's triumphant performance in the final match of the T20 World Cup 2024, where they secured a narrow seven-run victory over South Africa. Reflecting on India's ICC T20 World Cup triumph, Kapil credited the collective effort of the team rather than the contribution of a single player.
'Everyone in the team played well, that is why we won the cup,' Kapil remarked. In the World Cup final, Virat Kohli's impressive 76 runs alongside Axar Patel's 47 pushed India to a competitive total of 176/7. Despite some anxious moments, pivotal performances from Jasprit Bumrah (2/18) and Hardik Pandya (3/20) enabled India to secure their second T20 World Cup title with a seven-run victory.
Turning his attention to the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024, Kapil shared his expectations from the Indian golf team, remarking, 'We can express our good wishes, just go out and play. We do not want them to be under any pressure.' Notably, the Indian golf team for the Paris Olympics, announced in June, includes Shubhankar Sharma and Gaganjeet Bhullar for the men's competition, with Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar representing the women's contingent.
