Three-time world time trial champion Ellen van Dijk has been confirmed to represent the Netherlands at the upcoming Paris Olympics, as announced by the country's cycling federation (KNWU) on Wednesday. This news comes a mere six weeks after Van Dijk broke her ankle during a training camp in Spain.
Van Dijk suffered the injury after a collision with a trailer and had to undergo surgery in June. Despite the setback, she remained focused on her recovery with the goal of competing in the Paris Games. 'From the moment I fell, I knew what I had to do: get myself ready for the Games,' Van Dijk stated. 'It has been an intense period, but each day brings me one step closer to my goal. I am looking forward to joining the team and showing something beautiful together in Paris.'
The 37-year-old cyclist, who previously finished fourth in the time trial at the Rio 2016 Olympics, will compete in the cycling events scheduled from July 27 to August 11.
