The COVID-19 pandemic dashed India's hopes of participating in the Paris Olympics, but Maninder Pal Singh, secretary general of the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), asserted that they 'have plans in place' for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Despite winning three medals in cycling at the Asian Games, India has yet to qualify for the Olympics.

Speaking to PTI in an interaction arranged by HCL, Maninder attributed the failure to qualify to the pandemic's disruption of their preparation and qualification process. 'Cycling is not a sport that you can equate to others when it comes to Olympic qualification. It takes two and a half years to qualify for the Games. Besides taking part in the qualifiers, one needs to attain points from events of various classes,' said Maninder.

Maninder also noted the critical role of infrastructure and coaches in preparing cyclists, adding that necessary facilities are costly. 'Cycling alone cannot thrive on its riders, but it is hugely dependent on its infrastructure, not only the equipment but also the coaches,' he noted. Efforts to establish velodromes and develop certified coaches are part of their long-term strategy.

Additionally, Maninder announced the launch of a cyclothon event and talent hunt programmes, part of CFI's drive to promote cycling. 'We aim to get cyclists out of their home towns and villages,' he said, emphasizing the role of the government and Sports Authority of India in supporting these initiatives. The Chennai cyclothon, scheduled for October 6, marks the second edition of this event in the city.
