Sri Lanka's Dunith Wellalage and Pathum Nissanka showcased outstanding performances, steering their team to a score of 230/8 against India in the first ODI of the series at R. Premadasa Stadium on Friday. Winning the toss, Sri Lanka opted to bat, taking advantage of the pitch conditions in Colombo.
The opening duo, Pathum Nissanka (56 runs off 75 balls) and Avishka Fernando (1 run off 7 balls), managed only a seven-run stand before Mohammed Siraj dismissed Fernando in the third over. Kusal Mendis supported Nissanka with a 39-run partnership before being sent back to the pavilion by Shivam Dube in the 14th over. Nissanka continued his form despite losing partners at the other end.
Lower order contributions from Sadeera Samarawickrama (8), skipper Charith Asalanka (14), and Janith Liyanage (20) failed to stabilize the innings. Washington Sundar's vital strike in the 27th over sent Pathum Nissanka back. Yet, Dunith Wellalage's crucial 66 off 65 balls and Akila Dananjaya's 17 runs aided Sri Lanka's competitive total. Axar Patel led India's bowling unit with two wickets, while a surprising over from Shubman Gill conceded 14 runs but entertained the crowd.
India is tasked with chasing down 231 runs to secure a win in the series opener. Brief Score: Sri Lanka 230/8 (Dunith Wellalage 67*, Pathum Nissanka 56, Wanindu Hasaranga 24; Axar Patel 2/33) vs. India. (ANI)
