Avishka Fernando's 96-run innings and Dunith Wellalage's five-wicket performance helped Sri Lanka clinch a historic 110-run victory over India in the third ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium. With this win, the hosts sealed the series 2-0 against Rohit Sharma's squad, their first ODI series win over India in 27 years.
After winning the toss, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka opted to bat, a decision that proved advantageous. India struggled in both bowling and batting, unable to maintain a competitive edge. Although the Indian bowlers initially had control, they couldn’t prevent Sri Lanka from scoring 248/7.
Sri Lanka started strong, with openers Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando forming a promising partnership. Despite Fernando missing out on his century by just four runs, contributions from Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis ensured a competitive total. India's batting lineup faltered, with Rohit Sharma's 35 being the highest score. Dunith Wellalage's stellar performance dismantled India, concluding the visitors' innings at 138.
