The final day of the Covelong Classic 2024, the fourth and final leg of the National Surfing Championship, culminated in a triumphant win for Tamil Nadu surfers across all categories on Saturday.
Ramesh Budhial from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu's Kamali Moorthy were declared National Surfing Champions, rewarded based on cumulative points from the championship that began in March. The Men's overall champion for 2024 received a Jawa Yezdi motorbike, while the Women's overall champion was awarded a cash prize equivalent to the motorcycle's value.
Kamali Moorthy expressed her excitement, stating, "I am happy to have defended my title in the Groms 16 and Under-Girl's category, and to be crowned National Champion. My next goal is to win at the Asian Surf Championship." Ramesh Budihal shared similar sentiments, adding, "I have had my sights set on the National Championship title from the beginning and am delighted to reach this milestone. Now, my focus is on the Asian Surfing Championship."
In specific categories, child surfing prodigy Kishore Kumar emerged as the Men's Open Champion with a score of 15.47, while Shrishti Selvam took the Women's Open title with a score of 6.33 points. Local surfers Tayin Arun and Kamali Moorthy topped the Groms 16 & Under categories. Winners in each category received INR 20,000, with runners-up awarded INR 15,000 each.
The event, organized by the Tamil Nadu Surfing Association and hosted by Surf Turf, was supported by the Tamil Nadu Government and the Ministry of Youth Welfare and Sports Development. The Covelong Classic 2024's three-day competition concluded successfully, setting the stage for participants to aim for the Asian Surf Championship in the Maldives later this month.
