Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has publicly extended his support to wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit by 100 grams.

Ganguly remarked that Vinesh, having reached the finals, deserves at least a silver medal and questioned the rationale behind her disqualification. Ganguly made these comments during the Kolkata Food Festival.

Vinesh Phogat has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS), seeking a joint silver medal with Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. The CAS decision is expected on August 13. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar also supported Vinesh, urging a review of the rules that led to her disqualification.
