Pioneering XR: India's Leap into the Future of Technology

The Experiential Technology Innovation Centre (XTIC) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, has taken a pioneering role by hosting the first International XR symposium for the Global South. This event is a landmark in India's journey to lead in Extended Reality technology, pushing forward the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' initiative in immersive systems.

Professor M Manivannan, leading the charge at XTIC, highlighted how XR stands as the next major leap in technological advancements, following Artificial Intelligence. Experts at the symposium discussed XR's potential to significantly impact sectors like education and healthcare, emphasizing the importance of building a self-reliant, cost-effective XR ecosystem.

Despite having a robust developer base, India's contribution to the XR market remains below 1 per cent. With the global XR market projected to surpass USD 250 billion by 2030, the conference showcased XTIC's vision for an 'India XR Corridor' to foster collaboration among academia, industry, and government to escalate XR adoption across various sectors.
