FIFA World Cup 2018: Messi and Rojo Keeps Argentina in the World Cup

Javier Mascherano was bleeding from his left eye, but he never gave up chasing the ball whenever Argentina lost the ball. Argentina had to bleed for the win against Nigeria, and it was Marco Rojo who rise to the occasion to give Argentina another lifeline in the world cup. Argentina won 2-1 against Nigeria. 

Jorge Sampaoli made 5 changes in the team which lost 3-0 against Croatia, surprisingly goalkeeper Franco Armani makes his world cup and Argentina debut in an intense match against Nigeria. Willy Carballo was dropped after a horror show against Iceland and Croatia.

Argentina was leading the score 1-0 on the 15th minutes of the game. In the 35th minutes, Messi almost made the score 2-0 when he struck the woodwork from a free kick. Nigeria tried to create chances in the counter-attacks but failed to convert their chances.

In the starting of the second half, a foul by Javier Mascherano on Leon Balogun saw a yellow card for Mascherano and a penalty for Nigeria. Victor Moses took the opportunity to equalize for Nigeria and the scoreline was 1-1 in the starting minutes of second half. Argentina was trailing in the match and Nigeria was looking to qualify for the round of 16.

Argentina’s coach Jorge Sampaoli was heavily criticised by the football pundits for not using talents at his disposal. His first substitution saw Christain Pavon come in for Lucas Parez, while Juventus Midfielder Paulo Dybala sits in the bench.

Argentina attacked and tried to create chances but Nigeria’s defense denied them every time. A cross from the right side on the 86 minutes meets Marcos Rojo’s right-footed volley, Argentina were 2-1 up in the game. After the second goal, there was no coming back for Nigeria, Argentina holds them till the end of the match. The score remained 2-1 for Argentina.

Argentina will face France in the round of 16 clashes, France is one of the strong contenders in the World Cup. Lionel Messi found the net against Nigeria, and he needs to continue his goal scoring form against France if he wants to keep his world cup hope alive. While, Argentina’s Coach Jorge Sampaoli is yet to impress his critics, as Dybala and Sergio Aguero two world class players did not get their opportunity in the match.
