The ensuing Lok Sabha Election 2019 in India was contested in a highly heated political environment that continues even after the voting is over. There is a lot on stake in this election for political parties, politics, the credibility of the poll body, people, the credibility of exit polls and above all, the direction in which India will be led by 542 members of the 17th Lok Sabha.

Will it be Rahul Gandhi or Narendra Modi? Or can some other leader play frontrunner as regional parties strengthen their position in Lok Sabha election?

9:55 PMThe BJP's "apparent landslide victory" is likely to improve business sentiment and outlook for private investment, Fitch Ratings said Thursday. It said that from a credit rating perspective, Fitch would focus on the extent of the next government's efforts to improve India's weak fiscal finances.The global rating agency said it expects the government to remain reform-minded, as the BJP's manifesto highlighted the aim to improve the business environment and governance standards, strengthen infrastructure, and stimulate the manufacturing sector through a new industrial policy.

9:37 PMHaryana's former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda has lost Lok Sabha election from Sonepat by a huge margin of 1,64,864 votes. Here BJP's Ramesh Chander Kaushik won for the second consecutive time.

9:16 PMBJP is all set to get over 20 seats from its 282 in 2014. The rival Congress has improved its tally but by only 6 seats. As the main opposition party, Congress is likely to get 51 seats only, the post of Leader of Opposition seems to be vacant for 17th Lok Sabha. As per the rule at least 55 MPs are required for the post of Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Lok Sabha. The 16th Lok Sabha also did not have LOP as Congress had got only 44 seats. BJP registered clean sweep in several states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi.

4:50 PMThe Union Cabinet will meet on Friday evening to recommend the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha. The meet will be held a day after the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections in which the NDA is all set to retain power. After the Cabinet's recommendation is passed in the form of a resolution, President Ram Nath Kovind will dissolve the present Lok Sabha, the term of which is ending on June 3.The 17th Lok Sabha has to be constituted before June 3 and the process to form a new House will be initiated when the three Election Commissioners meet the President in the next few days to hand over the list of newly-elected members.

4:18 PMUnion Minister Smriti Irani leads by around 21,000 votes in Amethi forcing Rahul Gandhi to the trail. In 2014, Rahul Gandhi had defeated Irani but 2014 but this time Irani the seat seems tough for Rahul who represented it for three consecutive times since 2004.

4:17 PMFormer Union Minister Sharad Pawar said the opposition parties had anticipated the BJP would do well in certain states but did not expect "such a big victory" across the country. "Doubts were indeed raised (about EVMs functioning)," Pawar told reporters here."But I don't want to blame the machines now since the result is out. Once the verdict is out, it has to be accepted gracefully and I am accepting it gracefully," he said. Pawar said the "spectre of suspicion" indeed prevailed in the minds of people in the run-up to the polls.

3:13 PMWith the BJP headed for a landslide victory in the Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India has won again and together with everyone, a strong and inclusive nation will be built. Riding on a massive Modi wave sweeping through most parts of India, the BJP was set to return to power as it led in over 300 seats while the Congress trailed far behind with about 50, according to trends released by the Election Commission for all 542 seats that went to polls."With all+ development for all+ everybody's confidence = victorious India," Modi tweeted. "Together we grow. Together we prosper. Together we will build a strong and inclusive India. India wins yet again," he said.

2:28 PMCongress has maintained the lead at lone Lok Sabha seat of Puducherry.The ruling Congress Thursday established a strong lead of over 85,000 votes in the lone Lok Sabha constituency in the Union Territory. Congress candidate V Vaithilingam secured 1,77,340 votes while his nearest rival Narayanasamy Kesavan of AINRC has polled 92,048 votes, according to the latest information made available by the Election Commission.

1:27 PMThe trends of 17 seats are available for Telangana by 1 pm. Here TRS seems to emerge as the largest party by maintaining lead at 9 seats while BJP follows with 4 seats and Congress at 3. The Muslim right wing AIMIM is leading at 1 seat.

1:06 PMThe ruling BJP is leading in all the four Lok Sabha seats- Mandi, Kangra, Hamirpur and Shimla - in Himachal Pradesh, a state election officer said.In Mandi, the sitting BJP MP Ram Swaroop of BJP was leading by over 2,37000 votes against his nearest rival Aashray Sharma of Congress, he added.Kangra: BJP candidate Kishan Kapoor of BJP was ahead by 3,05,000 votes against his nearest rival Pawan Kajal of Congress.Hamirpur: Sitting BJP MP Anurag Thakur of BJP was leading by over 2,93,000 votes against his nearest rival Ram Lal Thakur of Congress, the official said.Shimla seat: BJP candidate Suresh Kashyap of BJP was forging ahead with 2,64,000 votes against his nearest rival Col Dr Dhani Ram Shandil of Congress.

1:00 PMBJP is maintaining a healthy lead in nine out of the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana, as per trends available, with Congress' sitting MP Deepender Singh Hooda giving a tough fight to the saffron party's candidate in Rohtak. Barring Rohtak, where Deepender Hooda is leading with a margin of more than 13,000 votes over BJP's Arvind Sharma, the BJP is comfortably placed on the remaining seats.

The counting exercise is on in over 4,000 counting centres amid concerns raised by opposition parties over alleged tampering of EVMs. They have asked the Election Commission to ensure transparency in counting.

03:16 AMThe Election Commission of India (EC) will begin counting votes at 8 am on Thursday on various counting centres across the country. The final results are likely to be delayed this time by four to six hours because of the introduction of additional Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) counting. In 2014, the results were declared between 3 to 6 pm but due to the counting of VVPATs, the final results are likely to be delayed by around six hours. Thus the final results will come in the late night of May 23. The Lok Sabha elections were held in seven phases across the 542 parliamentary constituencies from April 11 to May 19. Approximately 60 crore voters have cast ballots across 10 lakh booths in 29 states and seven union territories. The first update comes on completion of the first round of voting which is expected between 9 to 10 am from various parliamentary constituencies.

11:34 PMThe fate of 8,049 candidates, including 724 women, in the just-concluded Lok Sabha election, will be decided on Thursday when the results are announced. The Congress had fielded the maximum of 54 women candidates. It was closely followed by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had fielded 53 women.Among the other national parties, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) fielded 24 women candidates, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) 23, the CPI(M) 10, the CPI four, while the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) fielded one woman candidate. As many as 222 women contested the polls independently.Uttar Pradesh fielded the highest number of women at 104, followed by Maharashtra. Sixty-four women candidates have been fielded from Tamil Nadu, 55 from Bihar and 54 from West Bengal.

11:23 PMThe Election Commission Wednesday rejected the demand of 22 political parties to count paper trail machine slips before the counting of votes polled in electronic voting machines (EVMs), saying it has not been found "feasible".A day after a delegation met the EC, it issued a statement, saying after two rounds of in-depth discussions Wednesday and Thursday,"it has neither been found possible nor feasible to accede to this demand" in the overall context and especially in view of a Supreme Court judgment of April 8 which had directed the poll panel that the random selection of VVPATs will be subject to the process of slip verification as per the EVM guideline in force.Read More: EC rejects demand of 22 political parties to count VVPAT slips first
