How effective are vaccines against emerging COVID-19 variants?

Many countries are now being forced to face the prospect of offering booster shots to their citizens. Israel was among the first few countries that removed mask mandate for its citizens but Delta variant has thrown its plans into tailspin although the number of deaths has remained low. So a new consensus seems to be emerging, these early vaccines appear to be quite effective at preventing serious illness but less effective at preventing transmission.
