The mayor of Madrid has said that she is proud that the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) has chosen the city as the venue for the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between Argentine teams River Plate and Boca Juniors.

Manuela Carmena was pleased that the match, set to take place at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu stadium on December 9, is to be played in the Spanish capital, reports Efe.

"We are proud to think that this city is chosen as being safe and being such a welcoming city," Carmena said in an interview with the Spanish radio network Cadena Ser on Friday.

Conmebol decided the last leg of the Copa Libertadores is to be played outside Argentina after the team bus carrying Boca players came under attack by River fans in Buenos Aires' Belgrano neighborhood.

The arch-rivals Argentine teams played to a 2-2 draw at Boca's La Bombonera Stadium in the November 11 first leg of the final.
