The Mizoram government has ordered closure of all educational institutions, cinema halls, gymnasiums and swimming pools with effect from Tuesday till March 31 amid the growing coronavirus threat, an official said. The order was issued on Monday as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus, though the state has not reported any confirmed case of the disease till date, the official said.

The government advised people with coronavirus-like symptoms to either be self-quarantined at home or get admitted to hospital, he said. State health minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana presided over a meeting to review the situation and the decision was taken to shut all educational institutions ranging from universities to pre-schools from March 17, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state, the official said.

Authorities of the Mizoram University (MZU) and the Pachhunga University College (PUC) suspended classes from Tuesday in the wake of novel coronavirus outbreak. MZU registrar Prof Lal Nundanga said classes will remain suspended from March 17 to April 3 as per the Centre's directive to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

However, offices and administration will remain open and the suspension of classes will be reviewed on March 27, he said. According to the registrar, students will be allowed to collect study materials and fill up forms for examinations during the suspension period.
