Congress general secretary in charge of Madhya Pradesh Mukul Wasnik arrived in the state on Sunday on a two-day visit to chalk out a strategy for bypolls to 24 Assembly seats and help choose a leader of opposition. Twenty-two seats are lying vacant as Congress MLAs resigned from the 230-member House and joined the BJP, and two due to deaths of legislators.

No date has been announced as yet for the bypolls. The Congress government under Kamal Nath fell in March, paving way for Shivraj Singh Chouhan to become chief minister again.

After arriving here, Wasnik held meetings with MP Congress chief Kamal Nath, veteran leader Digvijaya Singh and others, a party functionary said. He is scheduled to interact with partymen in charge of the 24 seats as well as district presidents there.

"Wasnik is going to hold a meeting with the party spokesmen on Monday," the functionary added. Currently the BJP has 107 MLAs in the House whose effective strength is 206, while the Congress has 92 MLAs.
