South Africa's struggling state power firm Eskom said on Saturday it would cut up to 2,000 megawatts of electricity from the national grid from 10 p.m. local time (2000 GMT) until 8 a.m. (0600 GMT) on Sunday.

Eskom said it needed to replenish water levels at its pumped storage facilities and diesel at its open-cycle gas turbines to put it in a better position for next week when many people will return to work after the Christmas and New Year holidays.
