Chile will urge countries at the United Nations climate change conference in Santiago at the end of the year to adopt more ambitious commitments to deal with global warming, President Sebastian Pinera told reporters on Monday. The U.N. Paris Agreement was not strong enough "to prevent the world from continuing on a path that could end in tragedy," the president told a news conference.

"We will have to move forward so that countries assume more ambitious commitments," he said. The summit will be held on Dec. 2-13. Chile, fronting the Pacific Ocean at the southern tip of South America, will also advocate for the protection of Antarctica and the oceans, Pinera said.
