U.S.-Mexico planning immigration deal to thwart tariffs

The outlines of an immigration deal being discussed by U.S. and Mexican officials to thwart threatened American tariffs would have Mexico send 6,000 troops to the Guatemalan border and allow the United States to deport Central American asylum seekers to a third country, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.

However, President Donald Trump, who threatened to impose 5 percent tariff on goods from Mexico starting Monday if it did not do more to stem illegal immigration, might not accept the deal, a U.S. and a Mexican official told the Post on condition of anonymity.
