The Maharashtra government on Thursday approved creation of 'Deputy Regional Transport Office' in Ichalkaranji in Kolhapur district, an official said.

It will be the 51st RTO in the state, resulting in numbers of vehicles getting registered here starting with MH-51, he informed.

As per the government resolution issued, the transport commissioner has been directed to take Ichalkaranji municipal corporation's land on lease for the new RTO office, which will have one interceptor vehicle.

As per sources, the last time a Deputy RTO office was created was 10 years ago in Karad, the hometown of then chief minister Prithviraj Chavan.

Interestingly, the state government approved creation of the new RTO office when in charge post of 10 of 15 RTO offices and 11 of 35 deputy RTO offices are vacant, with junior officials manning them as additional charge, sources said.
