The effect of marijuana on our health can't be undermined. It not only increases the risk of various diseases but may also affect the ability to conceive as well. An article published in the journal of 'Canadian Medical Association' highlights five points one should know about marijuana and fertility.

According to the article, marijuana's use can decrease sperm count. The study has found that smoking marijuana more than once a week was associated with a 29 per cent reduction in sperm count. Another study cited in the article claimed that marijuana may delay or prevent ovulation. Ovulation was delayed in women who smoked marijuana more than three times in the three months.

Also, marijuana may affect the ability to conceive in couples with sub-fertility or infertility but does not appear to affect couples without fertility issues. The active ingredient in marijuana -- tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) -- acts on the receptors found in the hypothalamus, pituitary and internal reproductive organs in both males and females.

The article has emphasised that more and better quality research is needed into the effects of marijuana on fertility.
