Tension prevailed Monday at Goghat in Hooghly district, where four persons were injured following a clash between supporters of the BJP and the ruling Trinamool Congress, police said. Trouble began when the TMC supporters were felling trees, which the BJP workers objected to, resulting in a scuffle, they said.

The injured were admitted to the district hospital. Dilip Yadav, TMC district president and chairman of the Uttarpara-Kotrang Municipality, alleged that BJP workers insulted the national flag by replacing it with the party's saffron flag.

The BJP, however, denied the allegations. Local BJP leader Asit Kundu claimed that TMC supporters were illegally felling trees, and workers of the saffron party had raised an objection to it.
