Dense morning led to two multi-vehicle crashes Tuesday morning on a key Serbian highway, killing six people and injuring at least 27, police said.

The crashes involved a number of cars and trucks and probably happened because of the fog, police said in a statement.

Serbian state TV reported from the scene that some victims were stuck in their crashed cars for a while until rescuers pulled them out. One reporter described utter "chaos" against a backdrop of smashed cars and trucks.

The collisions took place on both sides of the main north-south highway in central Serbia, 110 kilometres (66 miles) southeast of the capital, Belgrade.

One unidentified truck driver told state TV that the fog was "dense as a wall." "I stopped and got out of the truck and then cars started bumping," he said.

Traffic has been halted in both directions amid the rescues and the crash investigation.
