A girl who died after falling from the stands on Mmabatho Stadium in South Africa's Mafikeng during the Mahika Mahikeng Festival has been identified as Lesego Khukhwane.

According to North West police, Lesego Khukhwane was an 18-years old who died falling from Mmabatho Stadium's stand in the early hours of Saturday (December 8).

She was treated by the doctors and paramedics but she was declared dead on the scene after she fell from the stadium ground. She fell from the grandstand where she had taken shelter due to raining.

According to Lesego's uncle Kalaemang Khukhwane, she did not return home two days after the festival and he and other family members went on a search to find her.

"When they arrived at the government mortuary, they found her body there. That was when we learnt that the girl who had died is actually my niece. I was the last person [in the family] to see her. I gave her R50 and took her to the bus station; her passing has really touched me," he said in grief.
