Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency pitches for more dams to prevent flood

Nigeria is in a requirement of smaller dams! This is what revealed by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.

The requirement of more small dams at strategic locations in Nigeria is to prevent flood during the rainy season. While revealing the plan at a press briefing and training of around 100 staffs of the agency in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, Clement Nze, Director General, Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency said that it is vital for the West African country to construct dams to effectively manage the threat of flooding.

The country could not construct the Dasin-Hausa dam in Adamawa State in the last four decades despite getting suggestion from the neighbouring nations. "Most of us are advocating that let Nigeria dam the tributaries of major rivers by building small dams instead of large massive dams in order to check flooding. For instance, we have the Kashimbilla dam on River Katsina, which was primarily built to address the problem of a lake in Cameroon. If we can build small dams within the tributaries of River Benue and do proper monitoring, it will go a long way to address any catastrophe coming from River Benue," Clement Nze opined.
