Arizona Coyotes centre Christian Dvorak will be sidelined indefinitely following surgery on a torn pectoral, the team announced Friday.

Dvorak underwent surgery in Phoenix on Friday after being hurt last week while rehabbing a separate, unrelated injury.

"Christian was making good progress when he injured his pectoral muscle during practice," Coyotes president and general manager John Chayka said in a statement. "It's unfortunate and unlucky, but the surgery went well today and we expect him to make a full recovery."

The 22-year-old Dvorak has not played yet this season, two months after signing a six-year contract extension with Arizona reportedly worth an average of $4.45 million per season.

Dvorak recorded 37 points (15 goals, 22 assists) in 78 games last season in his second NHL campaign. Overall, he has 30 goals and 40 assists (70 points) in 156 games with Arizona.

Dvorak was a second-round draft pick in 2014.
