Spain's Fernando Verdasco on Tuesday qualified for the second round of the Paris Masters after defeating Jeremy Chardy of France 6-4, 6-4.

It took Verdasco, world No. 27, one hour and 21 minutes to secure his second win in five career matches against Chardy, world No. 40, reports Efe.

Verdasco fired nine aces compared to Chardy's 10, but the Spaniard committed fewer double faults, four compared to Chardy's seven.

In his quest for an eighth singles title, Verdasco will have to get past world No. 1 Rafael Nadal of Spain on Wednesday.
