The Washington Nationals placed left-hander Jonny Venters on the 10-day injured list with a shoulder strain, and right-hander Kyle McGowin was called up to fill his bullpen spot. Venters, 34, signed a minor-league deal with the Nationals in May and was called up to the major league team a little more than two weeks ago after posting a 1.29 ERA in nine appearances at Double-A Harrisburg.

In three appearances with the Nationals, he has allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking two. Over five seasons, Venters is 20-13 with a 2.71 ERA in 272 innings with the Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays and Nationals. He did not pitch in the major leagues from 2013-17 after a third Tommy John surgery.

McGowin, 27, who was sent down in late June when Venters was added to the Nationals roster, has 11 strikeouts in 10 innings for Washington this season. But he has also given up 11 earned runs for a 9.90 ERA.
