The Chicago Cubs signed free agent catcher Jonathan Lucroy on Wednesday, per multiple reports. The 33-year-old veteran was designated for assignment last week and cleared waivers after being released by the Los Angeles Angels.

Lucroy batted .242 with seven homers and 30 RBIs in 74 games with the Angels in 2019, his first year with the team and his 10th season in the majors. An All-Star in 2014 and 2016, Lucroy is a career .275 hitter with 107 homers and 539 RBIs in 1,175 games with the Milwaukee Brewers, Texas Rangers, Colorado Rockies, Oakland A's and Angels.

The Cubs needed help behind the plate after Willson Contreras strained his right hamstring during Saturday's 4-1 win against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is expected to miss four weeks.
