The DreamWorks Animation movie Shrek 5 was announced back in 2016. Fans would be happy to learn that despite news of cancelation, the fifth installment is (reportedly) currently under development.

With the release of the first film, there have been twists to the animation format with brilliant portrayal of characters, catchy soundtracks, and cinematography. In 2010, The New York Times said, "nearly a decade after the first Shrek film they remain as vital and engaging fusions of image, personality, and voice as any characters in the history of animation."

There are four main movies in the Shrek franchise. They are as follows: Shrek (2001), Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010).

After the success of Shrek 2, producer Jeffrey Katzenberg disclosed that the story of Shrek had been outlined into five movies almost from the beginning. In other words, he had hinted for Shrek 5 way back in 2004.

"Before the first one was finished we talked about what the whole story of Shrek is, and each of the chapters answers questions about the first movie and gives us an insight," Jeffrey Katzenberg said.

However, the fifth installment is a sequel to Shrek 4 (Shrek Forever After). Shrek 5 will be more charming and attractive than the previous sequels. Interestingly, the famous Shrek movies villain Lord Farquaad is returning to the upcoming movie. Jeffrey Katzenberg once told about Shrek 5, that it would be the final installment of the franchise. The upcoming movie may follow "how Shrek came to be in the swamp, when we meet him in the first movie."

Michael McCullers, who joined as a new writer in the Shrek animation franchise, has hinted the storyline citing "a pretty big reinvention." Learning the storyline, many experts assume that the highly anticipated movie will be a reboot and will come with its own stand-alone adventurous story.

However, like other Hollywood projects, Shrek 5 production reportedly suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier, it was decided that the filming would start at the end of 2020, but it seems the Shrek 5 production might resume this year.

Shrek 5 is likely to hit the big screens in September 2022. Stay tuned to Devdiscourse for more updates.
