Happy Birthday Sanda Bunsidth!

The Doodle today is honoring the 104th birthday of Sanda Bunsidth, a talented weaver from Thailand who blended her innovative techniques with her cultural heritage.

Born in Ban Tha Muang, Thailand in 1919, Sanda Bunsidth did not receive a formal education but learned to read and write from her family. She started weaving at a young age under the guidance of her grandmother, a skilled craftswoman who specialized in dyes and ancient herbs.

Sanda Bunsidth's "bark cloth" weaving method, which she developed to make khaki-colored uniforms for her husband, gained attention from wives in her town who were interested in learning from her. This led to the formation of the "Ban Rai Phai Ngam Housewives Group," which Bunsidth taught and organized, and which eventually grew to over 40 members.

Their designs were well-received by the public, and Bunsidth became a folk icon in Thailand for her ability to use her environment as inspiration and incorporate natural dyes into her fabrics.

Sanda Bunsidth received numerous awards for her work, including the Outstanding Folk Artist Award in 1985 and the Science Society of Thailand's Award for Outstanding Lanna Science and technology worker in the field of textiles in 1986. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of Thai weavers.
