Writer Mani Shankar Mukherjee, better known as Sankar, has been appointed as the new sheriff of the city on the recommendation of the Calcutta High Court. The apolitical title is usually bestowed on one of the prominent personalities of Kolkata for a year.

James MacRabey was the first sheriff of Calcutta, appointed in 1775. Sir Elijah Impey had then just taken over as the Chief Justice of Supreme Court in the city. Born in Bongaon in 1933, Sankar's father, a lawyer, moved to Calcutta in 1937 and settled in Howrah.

Some of Sankar's well-known works include Chowringhee, Jana Aranya, Company Limited, Thackeray Mansion and The Monk as Man, The Unknown Life of Swami Vivekananda.
