Acting Gauteng Premier Condemns Spate of Mass Shootings, Vows Tough Action

Condemning the violence, Mamabolo said the provincial government would step up law enforcement and crime-prevention operations to curb the surge in shootings.

Acting Gauteng Premier Jacob Mamabolo has strongly condemned the recent escalation in mass shootings across Gauteng, following a deadly attack at a tavern in Bekkersdal that left at least nine people dead and 10 others injured.

The latest incident has once again highlighted growing concerns over violent crime in the province. Earlier this month, another mass shooting in Saulsville, Tshwane, claimed the lives of at least 11 people, while 14 others were injured. In addition, three other shooting incidents have been reported this year in Reiger Park, Westbury and Olievenhoutbosch, pointing to a disturbing pattern of gun violence.

Government Pledges Intensified Action

Condemning the violence, Mamabolo said the provincial government would step up law enforcement and crime-prevention operations to curb the surge in shootings. He announced that authorities would intensify efforts to shut down illegal taverns, remove illegal firearms from communities, and disrupt criminal networks that fuel violent crime.

"We will intensify operations to shut down illegal taverns, remove illegal firearms from our streets and disrupt the networks that enable such violence," Mamabolo said.

He stressed that the government would not allow criminal elements to terrorise communities or turn neighbourhoods into scenes of mass violence.

Call for Community Cooperation

The Acting Premier also appealed to residents to work closely with law enforcement agencies by sharing information on criminal activity. He emphasised that community cooperation is critical to preventing further bloodshed and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.

"We call upon our communities to share any information regarding this shooting or any other criminal activity with the police. We will not allow criminals to terrorise our communities and turn them into scenes of carnage," he said.

Condolences to Victims' Families

Expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life, Mamabolo conveyed condolences to the families and friends of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

"Our hearts are heavy, and we convey our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased. We also wish a full and speedy recovery to those who are injured," he said.

The Gauteng Provincial Government reiterated its commitment to restoring safety, strengthening law enforcement, and working with communities to address the root causes of violent crime.
