Efforts continued to restore train tracks on Wednesday, following the derailment of the Howrah-Mumbai mail in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharsawan district, which left the movement of trains affected for the second consecutive day, officials reported.

All derailed coaches and wagons have been cleared from the tracks, according to authorities.

The derailment on Tuesday morning near Barabambo station resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to 22 others. Senior DCM Aditya Kumar Choudhary stated that restoration of one of the three lines was being fast-tracked and should be functional by the end of the day.

The South Eastern Railway announced that a bi-directional third line might be operational by Wednesday. Seven trains were cancelled for the day, including the Chakradharpur-Rourkela Special, Santragachi-Nanded Express, and Titlagarh-Howrah Express.

The accident led to criticism from opposition parties aimed at Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, urging a focus on passenger safety. The railways issued ex-gratia payments of Rs 10 lakh to the families of deceased passengers, and Rs 1 lakh to those with minor injuries.
