India mounted a robust defense on Monday against criticism from the United States and the European Union over its importation of Russian crude oil. Labeling the rebuke as 'unjustified and unreasonable,' New Delhi accused the Western powers of double standards, pointing out that the US and EU continue to engage in trade with Russia.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted that the trade involves more than just energy, encompassing various products like fertilizers, chemicals, and machinery. It argued that other similar transactions are not considered vital national compulsions, unlike India's strategic import decisions.
Emphasizing its need to maintain affordable energy for its citizens, India remarked that its oil purchases arose from global market shifts. The Ministry cited the European Union's significant trade figures and expanding gas imports from Russia, underscoring the disparity in criticism. Meanwhile, US President Trump has proposed increased tariffs on Indian goods over the issue.
