Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin announced on Saturday that a new flyover at the Thirunagar-Melamadai junction will bear the name of Veeramangai Velunachiyar, an 18th-century freedom fighter.
The 950-metre structure, constructed at a cost of Rs 150.28 crore, aims to ease traffic congestion on the bustling Madurai-Thondi road. It is set for inauguration on December 7, as per a government press release.
The road extends from Anna Bus Stand junction, traversing Aavin and Melamadai junctions, before connecting Madurai Ring Road and ending at Poovanthi in Sivaganga district, serving as a critical state highway between Madurai and Sivaganga districts.
Due to several educational institutions along the route, the area currently experiences heavy traffic and significant waiting times at three major junctions, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The new flyover is poised to substantially alleviate traffic, enhancing smooth vehicular movement from the Madurai-Thondi road through Goripalayam to the Ring Road.
