On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's pioneering Vande Bharat sleeper train, enhancing transit between Howrah and Guwahati from Malda Town station in north Bengal. The train promises airline-like comfort at cost-effective fares.
The new service aims to provide faster, safer, and more convenient long-distance travel, crucially cutting travel time by 2.5 hours on the key Howrah–Guwahati route. This initiative is expected to invigorate religious travel and tourism.
During his two-day visit to eastern India, Modi emphasized development by launching multiple rail and road infrastructure projects. These initiatives, worth Rs 3,250 crore, are set to bolster connectivity in Bengal and the North East, aligning with political priorities ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.
