The Indian government has taken a significant step in transforming its maritime landscape by signing an agreement to establish the Bharat Container Shipping Line (BCSL). This initiative, announced on Tuesday, aims to create a comprehensive container ecosystem in the nation.
The BCSL formation aligns with the Rs 10,000-crore Container Manufacturing Assistance Scheme (CMAS) set forth in the Union Budget 2026-27. By focusing on enhancing containerised cargo capabilities, the government plans to make India a key player in international trade.
Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, alongside his counterpart from Railways, I&B, and Electronics, Ashwini Vaishnaw, underscored the strategy to develop a robust shipping framework linked to rail and ports. As part of this expansion, a connected MoU will see VO Chidambaranar Port Authority, IRFC, and SMFCL finance projects worth Rs 15,000 crore under the Sagarmala and PM Gati Shakti programmes.
