India has made significant strides in its sugar export efforts, having exported 2,01,547 tonnes of sugar through February during the 2025-26 marketing year, as per the All India Sugar Trade Association (AISTA). The United Arab Emirates emerged as the primary destination for these exports, according to AISTA's recent statement.
The Indian government controls sugar exports via allocated quotas among mills. For the current marketing year, spanning October to September, authorities approved exports totaling 2 million tonnes, with an additional 500,000 tonnes recently permitted. A considerable portion of these exports comprised white sugar, amounting to 163,000 tonnes, while refined sugar made up 37,638 tonnes.
India's sugar production is projected to increase by 13% to 29.6 million tonnes in the 2025-26 marketing year. AISTA welcomed the government-approved 500,000-tonne export increase, which is expected to facilitate more genuine sugar exports without financial burdens on exporting mills.
