Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) has marked a significant milestone at the Colombo port's west terminal, achieving the handling of one million TEUs in its inaugural year. This rapid development highlights the growing global presence of APSEZ and elevates the Indian Ocean Region's importance in international trade.
In collaboration with John Keells Holdings PLC and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, the Colombo West International Terminal is shaping up as a pivotal transhipment hub. The $800 million investment has bolstered Colombo's capacity, making it indispensable in connecting cargo flows across Asia, West Asia, and Europe.
The terminal is a marvel of modern engineering as it stands as the first fully automated deep-water terminal at the Port of Colombo. Its impressive 1,400-metre quay and around 20-metre water depth enable it to accommodate some of the largest ships on the Asia-Europe trade route, significantly expanding the port's handling capabilities with an annual capacity of approximately 3.2 million TEUs.
