The Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) has set a new standard in its 92-year history, reporting a record cargo throughput of 91.17 million tonnes during the fiscal year 2025-26. The previous benchmark of 82.62 million tonnes in 2024-25 was surpassed, with Chairperson M Angamuthu forecasting that the port will exceed 100 million tonnes in 2026-27.
Angamuthu emphasized that growth was fuelled by increased petroleum, oil, and lubricant (POL) cargoes, iron ore, and fertilizers, in addition to reduced berth delays and expedited vessel handling. The port achieved its highest single-day cargo handling of 5.5 lakh MT, managing 24 vessel movements within the same period and maintaining high berth occupancy.
Infrastructure upgrades, such as berth modernisation, storage extensions, and an improved railway network, were highlighted as key factors in efficient cargo evacuation. Additionally, ongoing collaborations with the Andhra Pradesh government aim to develop new ports, signaling VPA's strong growth trajectory and leading position among India's ports.
