Durban is set to take centre stage in South Africa's enterprise development landscape this week, as business leaders, policymakers and entrepreneurs converge for the Durban Business Indaba on 29 April 2026 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

Hosted by the eThekwini Municipality, the high-impact gathering comes at a critical time for small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), which continue to face mounting pressures from limited access to finance, regulatory complexity and constrained market opportunities.

Framed as a solutions-driven platform, the Indaba will bring together key stakeholders from across the public and private sectors to chart actionable pathways for SMME growth and sustainability.

Tackling the Core Barriers to SMME Success

Under the theme "Enabling SMME Growth through Funding, Compliance, Market Access and Strategic Partnerships," the Indaba will directly address the structural challenges that continue to limit the growth potential of small businesses in South Africa.

Among the key focus areas:

  • Access to funding: Bridging the financing gap that prevents many SMMEs from scaling operations

  • Tax compliance: Simplifying regulatory processes and improving compliance capacity

  • Market entry barriers: Opening procurement channels and supply chains to smaller enterprises

  • Business sustainability: Strengthening resilience in a volatile economic environment

With SMMEs widely recognised as a backbone of job creation and economic inclusion, the discussions are expected to generate practical interventions that can be implemented beyond the event itself.

High-Level Stakeholder Participation

The Indaba will feature a strong lineup of speakers and institutional partners, reflecting a coordinated approach to enterprise development.

Participating organisations include:

  • Proudly South African

  • South African Revenue Service (SARS)

  • Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA)

  • Illovo Sugar and other corporate players

This multi-sector representation is designed to foster direct engagement between SMMEs and large institutions, creating opportunities for partnerships, supplier development, and localisation.

Driving Localisation and Competitiveness

A central pillar of the Indaba is the push to strengthen localisation and enhance the competitiveness of South African products.

Discussions will explore how stronger collaboration between corporates and small businesses can:

  • Expand local procurement pipelines

  • Reduce reliance on imports

  • Improve product quality and standards

  • Position SMMEs to compete in both domestic and export markets

By aligning enterprise development with broader industrial policy goals, the Indaba aims to contribute to inclusive economic growth in the eThekwini region.

Part of a Legacy: 28 Years of the Durban Business Fair

The Indaba forms part of the Durban Business Fair Exhibition, a flagship event running from 30 April to 2 May 2026 at the Durban Exhibition Centre.

Now in its 28th year, the exhibition has become a cornerstone platform for connecting SMMEs with:

  • Buyers and investors

  • Government support programmes

  • Business development services

  • Networking and trade opportunities

The exhibition will be officially opened by Small Business Development Minister Stella Ndabeni, signalling strong national government backing for enterprise growth initiatives.

Creating Real Economic Opportunities

According to Themba Ntuli, Chairperson of the City's Economic Development and Planning Committee, the event is expected to attract hundreds of businesses showcasing products and services, generating tangible opportunities for trade and investment.

"This platform equips SMMEs with the insights, tools and connections needed to enable meaningful economic participation," Ntuli said.

Beyond dialogue, the Indaba and exhibition are structured to deliver real, measurable outcomes — from business deals and partnerships to knowledge transfer and market expansion.

A Call to Entrepreneurs and Stakeholders

SMMEs, entrepreneurs and stakeholders are encouraged to participate actively in the Indaba and exhibition, not only to access opportunities but also to contribute to shaping the future of enterprise development in Durban.

As South Africa continues to prioritise inclusive growth and job creation, platforms like the Durban Business Indaba are expected to play a pivotal role in unlocking the full potential of the SMME sector.
