The conflict emerged after meetings between local officials and protesting fishermen failed to resolve the standoff.

The Public Prosecutor's Office in Mutsamudu has initiated an investigation following the deadly encounter and subsequent road blockades. The riots began after the government enforced a significant rise in fuel prices, attributing the increase to ongoing turmoil in the Middle East.

In response to the national strike, which started earlier in the week, the Comorian government has pledged to cut official travel expenses and reduce customs duties by 40%. Despite these measures, transport and commerce in Moroni remain paralyzed, and 39 arrests have been recorded.
