Empowering North East: Fisheries and Dairy Initiatives Unveiled
The Regional Review Meeting in Mizoram launched significant fisheries and dairy projects to boost rural livelihoods. Key initiatives include Rs 32.15 crore for fisheries, expansion of dairy cooperatives, and promotion of scientific practices in pig farming. The event emphasized modern technology and coordinated efforts for economic growth in the North East.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying convened the 'Regional Review Meeting: North Eastern Region 2026' in Aizawl, Mizoram, announcing major initiatives to bolster rural economies through enhanced fisheries and dairy production. Presided over by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, with Minister of State George Kurian present, the event marked a significant step towards regional economic development.
Union Minister Singh inaugurated projects totaling approximately Rs 32.15 crore under the PMMSY and FIDF, targeting enhancements in the North Eastern Region's fisheries sector. Additionally, the introduction of Fisheries KCC cards and awards aimed to encourage fisheries startups and cooperatives. A Baseline Village Level Survey was initiated to facilitate the growth of Multipurpose Dairy Cooperative Societies (MDCS), offering substantial rural livelihood opportunities across the area.
In a bid to improve swine farming practices, the ministry also launched a booklet on 'Good Husbandry Practices in Pig Farming' along with an African Swine Fever (ASF) Awareness Film, promoting better productivity and disease prevention. Union Minister Singh stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to harness the region's fisheries potential, identifying ornamental fisheries as a promising export avenue. He also advocated for modernization and value-chain development, suggesting aquaparks, cluster development, and innovative technologies like biofloc systems to strengthen the sector. His visit to MULCO Dairy included inaugurating the Mizo Cafe, FPO office-cum-sale outlet, and launching the MULCO Cow Ghee. Singh emphasized the need for technology-driven reforms in dairy development, marking the region's move towards self-sufficiency in fisheries and dairy sectors.
