The rapidly expanding platform economy in India is facing significant legal challenges as existing frameworks fail to provide adequate welfare and social security for gig and delivery workers. Virjesh Upadhyay, Chairperson of the Dattopant Thengadi National Board for Workers Education and Development, called for a structural redesign of these laws.

In an exclusive interview with ANI during a Stakeholders' Consultation organized by FICCI and the ILO, Upadhyay pointed out the current legal structure does not account for the unique arrangements of platform workers. He stressed the need for laws that accommodate the evolving digital business landscape.

Addressing a host of attendees, he emphasized that grievance redressal mechanisms specific to platform workers must evolve to reflect Indian realities. Adding to this, he noted some aggregators like Uber, Swiggy, and Zomato have begun to address worker grievances, but a nuanced dialogue is essential for devising solutions rooted in Indian wisdom.

Urging for equitable welfare provisions, he insisted rights and protections of platform workers should match those of traditional workers. Discussions also centered around minimum wage policies and the impact of inflation on gig workers.

The government, he mentioned, aims to balance economic growth with worker welfare, having already proposed insurance coverage for gig workers. Upadhyay projected that in the foreseeable future, broader social security mechanisms will encompass gig workers under unified provident fund and insurance models.
