The Jharkhand government is set to launch eastern India's first university for physically challenged students, a minister revealed on Thursday.
According to the higher and technical education minister Champai Soren, the university will be based in Ranchi and will offer education customized to meet the needs of students with disabilities. Soren instructed officials to formulate a detailed proposal for the new institution.
Soren, who is the former chief minister of Jharkhand, also conducted a review meeting to assess the department's progress. He emphasized that the university would feature special courses and educational equipment designed for disabled students.
The government's plan also includes the 'Navothan Scholarship Scheme,' which promises to cover the full course fee—up to Rs 10 lakh per year—for deserving orphan and disabled students. Furthermore, these students will receive an annual assistance of Rs 48,000 for lodging and food.
Discussions were also held regarding the opening of new universities in Giridih, Sahebganj, Deoghar, Khunti, Gumla, and Jamshedpur.
