Extraction 3: Scott Stuber Sheds Light on Sequel's Development

Fans of the action-packed Extraction film series have been eagerly awaiting news on the status of Extraction 3, and Netflix's Head of Film, Scott Stuber, recently provided a promising update. Despite challenges like the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, it seems efforts are underway to bring back Chris Hemsworth's Tyler Rake for another thrilling adventure.

Earlier this year, during the Netflix fan event TUDUM, Chris Hemsworth and director Sam Hargrave officially announced the development of Extraction 3. However, unforeseen obstacles, including the SAG-AFTRA strike, have raised questions about the film's progress.

In an interview with Collider, Scott Stuber shared insights into the creative process, emphasizing the importance of finding the right elements. He noted, "You know, you've got to find the right thing." Reflecting on the success of Extraction 2, Stuber attributed its acclaim to being "emotional and complex." Drawing parallels with his experience on the Bourne movies, he praised Tony Gilroy's work on the second Bourne film, highlighting its emotional depth, particularly around Franka Potente's character's death.

"I think the second one was so good because it was emotional and complex. It kind of reminds me of when I worked on the Bourne movies. Tony Gilroy did such a good job on the second one of making it emotional and making that kind of activate around Franka [Potente’s] death,” said Stuber.

Extraction 2 introduced Idris Elba's character, the Man in the Suit, adding a new layer to the storyline. Stuber hinted at the potential for more from Elba's character, stating that bringing him into the franchise was an interesting evolution. While awaiting the script, Stuber expressed optimism about the future of the franchise, acknowledging the excellence demonstrated by the team in the previous films.

Stuber, discussing Elba's involvement, revealed that the familial background around Chris Hemsworth's motivation, similar to Extraction 2, could play a crucial role in the upcoming movie. Stuber's comments suggest that Elba's character might have a more significant role in Extraction 3, teasing fans with the possibility of further exploration.

Extraction 2 producer Anthony Russo had previously teased fans about the potential for a spin-off project featuring Idris Elba's character. He expressed excitement about the possibilities, stating, "I just know when I watched him in this film, I feel like 'Oh, geez, there's more fun to be had with him!'"
