In an unexpected twist of fate, Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi, who once dreamt of cricket stardom, found his true calling in chess, a turn of events he describes as a 'happy accident.'

Gujrathi recently contributed to India's historic gold medal win in the open category at the Budapest Olympiad, a feat doubly celebrated with the Indian women's team also clinching gold. Reflecting on this joyous achievement, Gujrathi recalls his childhood, stating, 'I was six years old and very mischievous when my parents encouraged me to take up an activity. Cricket was my initial choice, but my father suggested waiting a year, so I turned to chess.'

Gujrathi, a Grandmaster since 2013, also played a pivotal role in India securing silver at the Hangzhou Asian Games. He acknowledges the mounting pressure of being favorites at the Olympiad but highlights their successful 21 out of 22 score. 'Winning gold in the Chess Olympiad is a dream come true for any player,' he shared, expressing hope for chess's inclusion in future Summer Olympics. Now, he looks forward to celebrating this triumph with his family.
