In a significant conservation effort, two male rhinos, Chandra and Kanai, have been successfully translocated to Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve. This operation was conducted by the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), following international conservation translocation protocols.
The rhinos, aged five and four, respectively, were rescued during floods in 2020 and 2021. They had been receiving treatment at CWRC, a collaborative initiative established in 2002 aimed at rescuing and rehabilitating flood-affected and orphaned wild animals, especially in Kaziranga.
Park officials ensured that protocols were adhered to, involving a site election committee and necessary permissions. The rhinos have been moved to pre-release enclosures before their eventual return to the wild, underscoring the park's commitment to wildlife conservation.
