Nana Patole, a Congress leader, condemned the demolition activities at Varanasi's Manikarnika Ghat on Tuesday, labeling it an affront to Hindu heritage. The Ghat holds immense spiritual significance, believed to offer salvation to those whose last rites are performed there. Patole, a former Maharashtra Congress chief, highlighted the destructive impact on Hindu identity, asserting the desecration of a sacred site.
Protests have erupted against the demolition under the Ghat's redevelopment plan. Allegations have surfaced that a century-old idol of Ahilyabai Holkar, the esteemed 18th-century ruler who reconstructed various Hindu temples, was damaged. However, the district administration disputes these accusations. Patole emphasized how the actions disgrace both Hinduism and the Dhangar community, to which the Holkar family belongs.
Patole plans a visit to Varanasi on Wednesday to assess the situation firsthand. The controversy deepened as FIRs were filed against eight individuals accused of spreading AI-generated images and misinformation about the redevelopment efforts at Manikarnika Ghat. These developments have stirred significant unrest and highlighted tensions around heritage and modernity.
