Cardinal Poola Anthony, currently the Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad, was elected as the new President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) during its 37th general body meeting, held recently.
Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Anthony as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Hyderabad in November 2020. He was subsequently elevated to cardinal status during the Consistory on August 27, 2022, where he was assigned the titular church of Ss. Protomartiri a Via Aurelia Antica.
With the election of Cardinal Poola Anthony as the President of the CBCI, he assumes leadership of the Catholic Church in India at a pivotal moment. Bringing decades of pastoral and administrative experience, he is committed to emphasizing faith, justice, and dignity within the Church's mission.
