Hip-Hop Mayor: Zohran Mamdani's Dual Path in Politics and Music
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani continues to earn from his past as a rapper while pursuing his political career. Despite modest music royalties, his main income is from his political position. Mamdani humorously promoted his music, encouraging New Yorkers to listen. This blending of entertainment and politics isn't new.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, known for his short-lived career in rap, continues to receive earnings from music, according to his tax filings. The 34-year-old's political renown hasn't significantly boosted his music income, which increased slightly to USD 1,643 in royalties last year from USD 1,267 in 2024.
Jokingly advising New Yorkers to stream his music on Spotify, Mamdani humorously remarked that despite many claims, people aren't actually listening. From high school to his 20s, Mamdani released socially conscious rap under the names 'Young Cardamom' and 'Mr. Cardamom,' tackling themes from cultural norms to colonialism.
His political career now brings substantial income; as state Assembly member, Mamdani earned USD 131,296 in 2025. Combined with his wife's graphic design income, their joint total was approximately USD 145,000. Earning USD 258,750 as mayor, he follows past officials like Michael Bloomberg, who also earned entertainment royalties during their terms.
